  • A Timeless Wedding  (January 1, 2007)
One of the highlights of my ministry has been officiating at weddings. Somehow God has always given me and others a blessing; I’m sure most preachers could say the same. Ceremonies run the gamut, from the sublime, to the ridiculous . . . everything from a classic dip to a “lip lock&#
  • A Tale of Two Kings  (September 27, 2007)
One of the greatest historians of the past century was a man by the name of Samuel Elliot Morrison. During the course of his life, Morrison taught at Harvard, Yale and a number of other prestigious institutions...
  • Rebuilding for the Future  (February 1, 2007)
Nehemiah 4:1-6 Sometimes churches spend too much time talking about what we need to do and not enough time doing what needs to be done. Sometimes we seem to value planning and discussing more than we value doing. Have you seen those excellent television commercials advertising the Royal Bank
  • Twice in One Day  (July 1, 2007)
We read the story of the prodigal son like re-reading an old love letter we already know by heart. In our listening we first paid attention to the saga of the son who went away, did bad things, and came home desperate. Along the way we began to discover the part about the Elder Brother. It dawned on us that sometimes we church members were uncomfortably like this brother in the objective mood who did not know how to celebrate and enjoy his religion.

  • Living in the Spirit's Fullness  (July 1, 2007)
There are occupational hazards in being a Pastor. Let me mention two of them. One of them is that while people expect you to be pious, you can come across as a little too pious at times -- like the lady who came to a pastor at the end of a service, and was very effusive in her gratitude. She said, "That was the most wonderful sermon I've ever heard. That was absolutely fantastic! It was so powerful, it has changed my life!"

  • Leisure Suits  (March 1, 2007)
Genesis 2:2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. I want you to travel back in time with me for just a minute, back to the time of tiedyed shirts, bellbottom jeans, and disco clubs. Think back to the decade of muscl

  • The Day That Jesus Took His Newspaper to Work  (August 6, 2007)
There are some events so large that we always remember where we were when we first heard the news?the Kennedy and King assassinations, the Reagan shooting, the Challenger explosion, those planes crashing into the buildings, and the initial reports of Hurricane Katrina. Eight years ago this week, I was driving home from my grandfather?s funeral when...

1 Corinthians 2:12-13 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those w

Many times, we begin our Christian walk well. Our focus is set on God, and our hearts are fully committed to Him. Then without warning, pride begins to rise up...
  • Grappling with God  (July 1, 2007)
Genesis 32:24-32 I read recently about a man who had passed away and what they wanted the funeral parlor to do with the body. You see this man was a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and this is how the family wanted him remembered. So they told the funeral director that instead of placing him in
