How Do You View God?

Exodus 8:10
[Moses replied,] "May it be according to your word that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God."

Where do we get our concepts of God? Of who He is and how He operates this world that He created and sovereignly rules over?

Kids give us glimpses of how we used to think, or for many of us, how we still think. I ran across a little book that contained letters from children to pastors. Here are some samples:

"Dear Pastor, I know God loves everybody, but he never met my sister."

"Dear Minister, I would like to bring my dog to church on Sunday. She is only a mutt, but she is a good Christian."

Here's one that speaks of our culture: "I would like to read the Bible, but I would read it more if they would put it on TV."

And finally: "Dear Pastor, I would like to go to heaven someday because I know my big brother will not be there."

A friend of mine in Denver overheard his daughters talking during a thunderstorm one day. The older daughter said matter-of-factly, "That thunder you just heard is God moving His furniture."

The younger daughter nodded her head like she understood, and looked out the window at the pouring rain for a minute before she replied: "Yes, He just moved His waterbed, too."

Come on, admit it. You and I have some pretty silly notions about God, too. Some of us view Him as a giant policeman up there with a club, while others see Him only as a loving grandfather figure.

But God is so much more than one or the other. He's infinite. He's sovereign. He is to be feared and worshiped and loved. Honestly, how do you view God?

Prayer:

Find a concordance (the one in the back of your Bible will do). Look under "God" and read down through the verses, jotting down what God is and isn't. Take a moment to confess your misconceptions about Him, and worship Him using this new list.
Discuss: Make a list of word pictures or adjectives that describe God in your honest view of Him.
